Writing War Stories, the second edition of Do Bar Fights Count? How To Write Your Military Stories published in 2006, updated and with a new title due out Winter 2018

“There are many books about the craft of writing available, but this one takes on a specific mission and never deviates from that focus. In the process, not only does the book deliver many useful bits of craft for any writer, but it highlights specific issues faced by veterans, especially veterans who aspire to write.” “The material presented in the book is first-rate and exciting.” Judge 95, Writer’s Digest 14th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards

Writing War Stories is the book version of the ten-week Writing War Stories class I taught at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon, from 1997 through 2000.

The book uses classroom examples, military references, and my personal military experiences to educate and coach veterans through my “Clint Eastwood School of Writing, where we write and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly.”

Broken into four sections, the book covers Writer Basic Training, Specific Veteran Groups, Using Writing to Heal and Shoving Off. I use my sense of humor and empathy for all military personnel. Topics include swearing, suicide, and sex.

Homework assignments and step-by-step instructions make this an easy to follow guide for all military service members from World War II to Iraq, Afghanistan and beyond.
